Fitted wardrobes are one of those home improvements that can feel impossible to price. One quote comes in at £1,800, another at £4,500, and both are described as a fitted wardrobe. The difference is usually not a mystery. It is a mix of board quality, door style, internal fittings, labour, access and the small extras that only appear once the old furniture is out and the wall is exposed.

If you are budgeting for fitted bedroom storage in Bacup or anywhere in Rossendale in 2026, it helps to know what you are actually paying for. This is not a set of fixed prices. It is a breakdown of the moving parts, so you can compare quotes with a clearer head.

The headline figure is rarely the whole story

A typical fitted wardrobe in a Bacup bedroom might start around £1,800 to £2,500 for a straightforward run with basic internals and standard doors. A larger wall of storage, a more complex room shape or a premium door finish can easily push the figure past £4,000 or £5,000. Neither number is wrong. They are just describing different jobs.

The problem is that many quotes lead with the total and bury the detail. If one quote includes painting, waste removal and making good, and another does not, the cheaper one can look better than it really is. Before you compare totals, compare the specification line by line.

What you are actually paying for

A fitted wardrobe is made up of several parts. The carcass is the box: the sides, back, shelves and uprights. The board choice affects cost, durability and how the wardrobe handles Lancashire's damp air. Standard chipboard is common and affordable. Moisture-resistant board or a higher-grade melamine finish costs more but can be worth it in a bedroom that suffers from condensation.

The next cost is the door. Sliding doors usually cost more than hinged doors because of the track and roller system. Shaker-style doors, mirror panels and made-to-measure finishes add more. A simple flat door in a standard colour is at the cheaper end. A painted finish or a specialist veneer is at the other.

Internals matter too. A basic layout with a hanging rail and a shelf is very different from one with drawers, shoe racks, pull-out trays, LED lighting and adjustable shelving. Every extra fitting adds material and fitting time. It also adds value in everyday use, but it is not free.

Fitting labour and making good

Labour is often the part homeowners underestimate. A straightforward wardrobe on a flat, plumb wall can be fitted in a day. A wardrobe in an older Bacup terrace with crooked walls, a sloping ceiling or a chimney breast to work around can take longer. The fitter may need to scribe panels, pack the frame and adjust doors so they close properly.

Making good is the other hidden cost. Removing old wardrobes can leave holes, damaged plaster and skirting boards that need patching. If the new wardrobe does not cover the whole wall, you may need a decorator. If the old units were fitted around a gas or electrical point, you may need a qualified tradesperson before the new storage goes in.

Some fitters include making good and waste removal in their quote. Others do not. Ask directly. A quote that looks £300 cheaper may simply leave you to sort the rubbish and the painting yourself.

Why quotes vary so much across Rossendale

Local fitters vary in size, overheads and specialism. A one-person workshop may be competitive on a simple job but slower on a complex one. A larger company may charge more but include design, delivery and aftercare. Some quotes include VAT, some do not. Some include a site survey, some guess from photos.

The age of the property also matters. Bacup has a lot of Victorian terraces and older semis. Walls are rarely straight, floors are rarely level and ceilings can slope. A fitter who knows the local housing stock will price for that. A fitter who mostly works on new-builds may not.

The extras homeowners forget to budget for

There are a few costs that catch people out again and again.

A sensible rule is to add 10% to 15% to your quoted price for these extras. If the job is in an older property, add a little more.

How to compare like-for-like quotes

Ask every fitter for a written breakdown. It should list the carcass material, door type, internals, handles, lighting, delivery, fitting, waste removal and making good. Check whether VAT is included. Ask what happens if the wall is out of plumb or the floor slopes.

Do not compare a basic quote with a premium one and assume the cheaper fitter is better value. Compare the same specification. If one quote includes soft-close drawers and the other does not, the prices are not directly comparable. If one includes painting and the other leaves you to decorate, factor that in.

It also helps to ask for a couple of local references or photos of similar work. A fitter who has worked in Bacup terraces will understand the quirks. A fitter who has only worked on flat new-build walls may be learning on your bedroom.

A sensible way to budget

Work out your must-haves first: the amount of hanging space, the number of drawers and the door style that suits the room. Then get three quotes for the same specification. Keep a contingency for making good and decorating. If the total feels too high, ask what could be simplified: a standard door finish, fewer internal drawers or a smaller run of storage.

Fitted storage is a long-term purchase. The cheapest quote is not always the best value, and the most expensive is not automatically the best job. In Bacup and across Rossendale, the right price is the one that covers the work properly, uses materials suited to the room and leaves you with storage that still works in ten years' time.
